Who we are
Carruthers & Kent is a new, independent fine wine company in the North East of England. It was born out of a passion for the fine things in life; Wine, first and foremost, closely followed by food, closely followed by our desire to share this passion for wine and food with our customers in the form of good old fashioned service. The fine things in life are not necessarily the rarest or the most expensive, but to get on our shelves, those fine things have to taste good, and be great value for money.
It's hard work, but some-one has to do it, each and every product that we stock has been handpicked and tasted by our good selves. If they taste good and are worth the money, we will sell them. Simple as that.

Claire Carruthers is - "guess what ?" - the Carruthers in Carruthers & Kent. She started life as a Graphic Designer until she discovered wine and its many attributes, and cut her cloth at Oddbins where she managed a branch for 15 years in the Gosforth area of Newcastle, getting to know the area and its residents very well.
Somewhere in that vague fog of well over a decade she sat all her "Wine & Spirit Education Trust" exams right up to the Diploma. She won numerous sales incentive trips to some of the best vineyards right around the world where she spent quality time with the winemakers, and even helped out at harvest time. If you want her to bore you rigid with her tales of millongas and malbecs in Argentina, being the queen bee in Chile, or riding a Harley round the Barossa in Oz, she will jump at the chance. If you look closely at her waistline, you will see she LOVES her wine (correct at the time of going to print), and loves nothing better than to share that love using her unique selling techniques, ie. she doesn't let you say no - not that easily anyway.
Mo O'Toole doubles as the Kent in the partnership, a long story only to be shared over a glass of wine, or two. She has spent her career working all over Continental and Eastern Europe and has written, spoken and lectured as far as South America, South Africa and Australia. During that time she never tired of hunting out small speciality shops, restaurants or galleries; all inspiring, gorgeous and unusual places where interesting people gather to chew the fat with knowledgeable patrons, to find wines, to sample and buy great food and generally to share other peoples' appreciation of first rate culture. She has assimilated the look and atmosphere of many unique places that enrich lives, taste, conversation and friendships. In addition to this, Mo brings her considerable experience in communication and client / media relations to spread the message that Carruthers & Kent offers something different. The person behind tastings and events and usually behind the scenes as well, she will work with Claire to create that special experience for each Carruthers & Kent customer.
